Camping with a Propane Camp Stove

A propane camp stove can make your camping experience more enjoyable by allowing you to eat a wide assortment of hot foods.   Yes, a hot meal while camping is possible. In order to do that you have a couple of choices – learn to cook over an open fire or use a propane camp stove. For the less experienced camper, the propane camp stove is the better option. With a propane camp stove, you can cook like you were at home.

Camp Stove Options

The propane camp stove comes in many varieties and sizes – from a one burner table top stove, to a multi-burner unit with a stand. Camping with a family makes the two burner camp stove a must. For backpacking, you may want a smaller, lighter camp stove. Another versatile option is to use a barbeque (for burgers and hotdogs) or griddle (for pancakes, bacon and eggs).  You can also put a pot or pan directly on the grill.  A couple of other things to look for on your propane camp stove are windscreens and type of ignition. Using your camp stove outside means there will be wind, and the wind screens will help keep the stove lit. Some of the propane camp stoves have an ignition button for easy starting. Always remember to bring matches in case the ignition switch fails. You may also want to find a case for your propane camp stove to make it easier to carry and protect it from all the jostling that happens when driving. Propane is the most common fuel for these stoves and comes in small canisters.

Efficiency

The efficiency of a propane camp stove is measured in BTU’s or British Thermal Units. The higher the BTU output, the hotter the stove will burn. Another efficiency measurement is the boiling time. The faster the time it can get water to boil, the more efficient the camp stove.

Tips for Use

Always try your propane camp stove at home before you take it camping. Make sure you know how to connect the fuel canisters, light the stove, connect any legs (if the stove has any) and know how to shut it off. Never use a propane camp stove in an enclosed area, such as a tent or car. Always make sure your propane camp stove is on a solid and stable surface. Always disconnect the fuel from the stove when you are finished. Store your fuel canisters in a safe place, away from your other camping gear in case they leak. Also, do not smoke around your propane camp stove as the fuel is very volatile and can get on your hands or clothing. Always read the user manual before using any propane camp stove.

Make sure to consider all of these factors before you make your purchase of a propane camp stove.  Instead of cold sandwiches and pre-packaged foods, you can enjoy a wide variety of tasty warm food while camping far from civilization using your propane camp stove.
